In response to "deep hazards to society and mankind," more than 2,600 IT industry leaders and researchers have signed an open letter calling for a temporary "stop" to further artificial intelligence (AI) development.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple, and several CEOs, CTOs, and academics in the field of artificial intelligence were among the signatories of the letter, which was written by the US think tank Future of Life Institute (FOLI) on March 22.
The institute shared worries that "human-competitive intelligence might pose serious hazards to society and humanity," among other reasons, and urged all AI businesses to "immediately cease" developing AI systems that are more potent than GPT-4 for at least six months:
Advanced AI should be prepared for and handled with equivalent attention and resources since it might signal a significant shift in the evolution of life on Earth. In its letter, the institution stated that this level of planning and administration is regrettably lacking.
The most recent version of OpenAI's chatbot driven by artificial intelligence, known as GPT-4, was made available on March 14. It has so far achieved 90 percentile passing rates on some of the most difficult high school and legal tests in the United States. It is said to be ten times more sophisticated than ChatGPT's initial release. AI companies are engaged in an "out-of-control race" to create more potent AI, which "no one - not even their inventors - can understand, anticipate, or consistently control," according to FOLI.

One of the main worries was whether automation will "automate away" all work prospects and perhaps inundate media conduits with "propaganda and falsity."
The entrepreneurial endeavors of these AI enterprises, according to FOLI, may pose an existential danger. Should we create artificial intelligence that could eventually outnumber, outsmart, replace, and surpass human intelligence? Should we take a chance at losing control of civilization?
ChatGPT Now Has The Capability to Access The Internet Through Newly Installed OpenAI Plugins
With the addition of new OpenAI plugins, ChatGPT now has access to the internet. The CEO of Galaxy Digital, Mike Novogratz, recently expressed astonishment at the regulatory attention paid to cryptocurrency rather than artificial intelligence. During a shareholder call on March 28, he remarked that the government's priorities were completely backward, and more attention should be paid to regulating AI. Governments should impose a ban on AI development, according to FOLI, if a halt in its advancement is not swiftly implemented.
