Ethereum's roadmap for the upcoming year, unveiled by co-founder Vitalik Buterin on December 30, 2023, indicates subtle modifications compared to the previous plan. Through a series of visual aids shared on the X social platform, Buterin outlined Ethereum's 2024 agenda, emphasizing six core pillars: the Merge, the Surge, the Scourge, the Verge, the Purge, and the Splurge. The Merge stands out as a foundational aspect of the roadmap, designed to fortify a streamlined proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism.

This initiative, initiated in September 2022, amalgamated the Ethereum mainnet with the PoS-oriented Beacon Chain. Meanwhile, the Surge initiative sets its sights on achieving a throughput of 100,000 transactions per second across both Ethereum's primary chain and its layer 2 solutions, aiming to bolster the network's scalability. Addressing potential vulnerabilities associated with Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) and liquidity pools, the Scourge is dedicated to curbing risks of economic concentration within Ethereum.
Furthermore, Buterin highlighted the significance of Single-Slot Finality (SSF) as a remedial measure for Ethereum's existing limitations. He also commended progress in layer 2 technologies and the implementation of Merkle trees. SSF's goal is to cement the irreversibility of blockchain transactions unless a significant portion of the staked Ether is sacrificed. On the other hand, the Purge strives to simplify the protocol's usability, while the Verge focuses on streamlining block verification processes. Lastly, the Splurge encompasses a broad spectrum of initiatives vital for Ethereum's evolutionary journey.
Ethereum is set to undergo significant advancements, with the upcoming Dencun hard fork being a pivotal moment on the calendar. During the Ethereum All Core Developers assembly on October 21, 2023, details regarding the anticipated upgrade timeline were shared. Tim Beiko, a key figure in Ethereum's development, took to the X platform to outline the plans. He indicated that, barring any significant setbacks, Ethereum's public testnets—including Goerly, Sepolia, and Holesky—are slated for upgrades on January 17, January 30, and February 7, respectively. Notably, this marks the concluding phase for Goerli, as preparations are being made to phase it out of active testing, signaling that developers will cease its ongoing maintenance.
